22.2. Mass demonstrations in Algeria and the return of the popular movement

From Soumia Benlahrech

There have been calls recently to renew the popular movement rejecting the regime whose roots have not changed since independence.protesting against the absence of any change and the return of repression and arbitrary arrests  of activists .will the algerian people return to demonstrate on the second anniversary of their movement ? And will the revolution resume its activities after a one year hiatus ?

On february 22 ,massive  demonstration  erupted in all parts of the country , with large numbers of protesters from all walks of life : women , men , children …that gave the movement an impetus that distinguished it from the rest of the revolutions in the arab world withe its steadfast  peace.

Demonstrations  came to reject the announcement of Bouteflika’s condidacy for a fifth term, which was considered merely  a symbol  of network of interests in which there were leaders from his party FLN ,the army ,the intelligence services and the businessmen close to him who controlled the state.Tightly and monopolized all wealth and they deprived the people of democracy and the right to self-determination the demonstrators succeeded in forcing the Algerian president to resign and presenting a number of his associates to the courts on charges of corruption and squandering public money. Unfortunately they were just mock courts aimed at calming the street , which prompted people not to stop demonstrating and cling to the idea of the necessity of eradicating the system from its roots. Especially after their awareness of the schemes of the regime that seeks to survive through manipulation and creating discrimination in the ranks of the revolutionaries. Consolidating of racial thought  , here emerged the personality of Gaïd Salah, the chief of staff , who  excelled in dividing the ranks of the popular movement , and who prepared premature  elections that most Algerians boycotted .Then Abdelmadjid Tebboune was imposed as president of the republic, who was close to the previously mentioned strongman, as he was a former minister in Bouteflika’s government and was known for his corruption.

New Algeria :

The  Algerian people live in their new Algeria in a dark and bitter reality , in which the authority is still relying on old methods based on iron fist policy .This is through a set of measures such as accelerating the pace of prosecutions and convictions of activists ,opponents media professionals and pioneers of communication sites, which included various segments of society , even children.Dozens of them are stille in the totalitarian regime’s pisons to this day , and the vast majority of them follow because of publications criticizing the executive authority on social media . The worst   thing about that is the disclosure of cases of torture , rape , ill_treatment and care , and this was what surprised the algerians .The student Walid Nekich (25 years) who was a prisoner of conscience during his trial that took place days ago , which was mentioned before the judge declared that he was raped by police for six consecutive days in the ugliest way. This caused a state of extreme confusion among the authority and a state of severe anger among the citizens who strongly denounced the call to this carrupt system in violation of human rights and freedoms, This prompted the authority to order his release immediately after his life sentence was !!!

In addition  to the exploitation of the media , which deliberately changes the facts and the reality that Algerians live and conceals the popular movement , at the same time it works to confuse public by convincing it that the revolution is nothing but a means to threaten the stability of the country .And  that there are foreign hands running it to sabotage the country  and bring it into a civil war again.

In addition to the corona pendemic , which played in favor of the current system . And it led to the voluntary cessation of demonstrations and this to prevent the spread of the virus, which is another matter that the regime used to pursue a nuber of movement leaders and activists. And lifting the restrictions on citizens under the pretext of corona soetimes and on the pretext of security reasons at other times.

The pressure generates an explosion :

The regime’s dirty practices and squalid economic conditions that made the country look like a bomb about to explode in the face of the rulers who have proven their failure in the cours of the country .Now the Algerian popular movement seeks to re-press the current regime , by commemorating the second anniversary of the movement‘s launch. And to return again and continuously to achieve freedom and establish democracy , as well as building a state of justice and law. In addition to popular mobilization and awareness on social media to encourage citizens to go out and resume the revolution and break the wall of fear.

Today mass demonstrations are back on the streets of Algeria. Protesters walked through the centre of the capital, waving national flags.
